Capromorelin

What is capromorelin?

Capromorelin (brand name: Entyce®) is a systemic appetite stimulant used to encourage appetite in dogs and help manage weight loss in cats with chronic kidney disease.

How is capromorelin given?

Capromorelin is given by mouth in the form of a liquid solution. Shake the bottle gently, then use the provided syringe to withdraw the medication. Rinse the syringe after every dose.

This medication should take effect in 1 to 2 hours.

What if I miss giving my pet the medication?

Give the missed dose as soon as you remember, and then wait the recommended amount of time between doses.

Never give your pet two doses at once or give extra doses.

Are there any potential side effects?

Side effects include diarrhea, vomiting, increased drinking and urination, drooling, gas, nausea, abdominal pain, increased gastrointestinal sounds, head shaking, and lethargy. In cats, dehydration and infections have been reported. Bloodwork side effects include an increase in blood urea nitrogen (a kidney function indicator) and an increase in phosphorus levels.

This medication is short-acting and should stop working within 24 hours, although pets with kidney and/or liver disease may have slightly longer effects.

Are there any risk factors for this medication?

This medication should not be used in pets that are allergic to it. It should be used with caution in pets with kidney or liver disease. Avoid use in cats with acromegaly. Use in pregnant, lactating, or breeding animals has not been evaluated, and therefore should be used with caution.

Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?

Use this medication cautiously with medications including amiodarone, diltiazem, cimetidine, erythromycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, rifampin, and phenobarbital.

Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking.

Is there any monitoring that needs to be done with this medication?

Your veterinarian may monitor your pet for its food and fluid intake and for changes in body weight. They may also monitor your pet to be sure that the medication is working.

How do I store capromorelin?

Capromorelin should be stored at or below 30°C (86°F) and kept in a dark place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

What should I do in case of emergency?

If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office immediately. If they are not available, follow their directions in contacting an emergency facility.
