Imidacloprid Oral

What is imidacloprid oral?

Imidacloprid oral (brand name Advantus®) is an oral medication used to treat flea infestations in dogs.

How is imidacloprid oral given?

  • Systemic imidacloprid oral is given by mouth, in the form of a chewable tablet.
  • Your dog should be weighed to ensure the correct dose.

This medication will take effect quickly, in about 1 to 2 hours, with 97% of fleas killed within 4 hours. Improvement in clinical signs should follow.

What if I miss giving my pet the medication?

If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember, and then wait the recommended amount of time between doses. Do not give the pet two doses at once or give extra doses. Do not give more than one tablet per day.

Are there any potential side effects?

Side effects are uncommon if used as directed. Imidacloprid oral may cause the following side effects:

  • vomiting
  • soft stools
  • decreased appetite
  • difficulty walking

Serious adverse reactions may occur. If any of the following signs of an allergic reaction develop, stop giving imidacloprid oral and contact your veterinarian immediately

  • noisy breathing
  • collapse
  • pale gums

This short-acting medication should stop working within 24 hours, although effects can be longer in pets with liver or kidney disease.

Are there any risk factors for this medication?

Imidacloprid oral should NOT BE USED in:

  • cats
  • puppies younger than 10 weeks of age or weighing less than 4 pounds
  • dogs that are pregnant or lactating

Imidacloprid oral should be USED WITH CAUTION in:

  • debilitated and geriatric dogs

Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?

There are no drug interactions reported at this time. Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking.

Is any monitoring needed with this medication?

  • No specific monitoring is required while your pet is taking this medication.
  • Your veterinarian may monitor your pet to be sure that the medication is working.

How do I store imidacloprid oral?

  • Store at room temperature, between 68°F and 77°F (20°C and 25°C).
  • Protect from light.

What should I do in case of emergency?

If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office immediately. If they are not available, follow their directions in contacting an emergency facility.
